Women's Basketball Sneaks by Iona, 53-51

Baltimore, Md. - Brittany Dunn hit a jump shot with four seconds left on the clock to give Loyola a 53-51 advantage over Iona Sunday at Reitz Arena. The Greyhounds improve to 9-16 overall and 8-8 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference while the Gaels slip to 5-20 overall and 3-13 in conference play.

Iona started the contest with a 7-2 run for the lead at 14:32. The Greyhounds got within one at 7-6 with Kerri-Lynn Orsini's three at 12:12. Orsini's basket was the first field goal for Loyola. The squads went back and forth for nearly six minutes with Iona always in the lead before baskets by Lauren Troupe and Dunn gave the Greyhounds a 14-13 lead at 5:29. After a 2-for-2 effort from the line by Krystle Harrington at 4:52, Regan Pettijohn brought Iona within one at 16-15. The Gaels Melissa Yeagley hit two shots from the charity stripe to reclaim the advantage for Iona at 17-16 with 2:32 left to play in the half. But the Greyhounds refused to go into the break with the deficit as they scored the final eight points for the 23-17 half time score. Jackie Valderas scored four points in that spread for Loyola.

In the second half, the Greyhounds steadily built up a 40-29 lead with 11:45. Pettijohn sparked an 8-0 run to get Iona back within reach at 40-37 with 9:16 on the clock. After exchanging baskets, Meghan Wood completed a huge three-point play to give Loyola a bigger edge, 45-39 with 5:12 left. The Gaels Pettijohn and Meg Abele didn't give up as the scored the next 11 straight points to give Iona the 50-47 lead with just 39 seconds left on the clock. Krystle Harrington drove to the basket on the next trip down the court to cut the Iona lead to 50-49 before the Greyhounds were forced to foul Abele. Abele hit the first of two shots but missed the second as Katie Scherle came up with a huge defensive board to give Loyola possession. Harrington again went straight to the basket to tie the game at 51 with 22 seconds left. Iona turned the ball over on their next possession and as the clock ticked away, Harrington found an open Dunn who nailed the basket with four seconds left to give Loyola their second straight win at 53-51.

Loyola's scoring was evenly distributed as Harrington led with 11 points. Scherle and Troupe followed with nine points each and Valderas and Dunn each chipped in eight. Scherle led on the board with eight and was followed by Valderas and Orsini with seven.

Iona was led by Abele's 14 points while Pettijohn added 13 points and 13 rebounds.

The Greyhounds return to the road for the final two games of the regular season with Rider on tap next on February 24 at 7:00 p.m.
