New Rochelle, N.Y. - The Loyola College women's basketball team fell to Iona, 64-49, Monday in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at the Hynes Center. With the loss, the Greyhounds fall to 16-10 on the season and 11-5 in the conference while the Gaels improve to 17-10 and 12-4 in the league.
Iona started the first half strong, outscoring Loyola 8-1 in the opening three and a half minutes and not allowing a field goal until 16:25. Iona continued to lead but with the score set at 13-7 at 13:07, the Greyhounds went on an 18-0 to claim the advantage 25-13 at the seven minute mark. Vika Sholokhova started the run with a three at 12:43. She added a free-throw in the run for four points while freshman Erica DiClemente scored six in the run, all from the free-throw line. Classmate Kaitlin Grant and junior Tynisha Davis each added a basket. Senior Brittany Dunn scored four points including the final basket of the run when Grant tipped the ball ahead to her off a pass on Iona's end for the fast break basket.
The Gaels answered with a run of their own, outscoring Loyola 10-2. Iona's Martina Weber scored the first eight points in the run starting at 6:40 while Loyola's DiClemente interrupted her run with a basket at 6:15. Iona's Jessica Smith scored the final basket in the run for the 27-23 score with three minutes remaining. DiClemente hit a jumper at 2:16 for the 29-23 Loyola lead. The basket gave her 14 first half points, one point shy of her career-high. Gael Tiara Headed scored the next five points to cut the `Hounds lead to one, 29-28 with a minute left before intermission. Ebony Toliver answered with a basket of her own for the 31-28 score before Headen ended the half with a basket for the 31-30 score with Loyola ahead by one.
The teams exchanged the lead early in the second half but after a basket by Grant at 17:02 for the 33-32 Loyola lead, Iona scored the next nine straight points capped by a three by Toni Horvath to take a 41-33 lead at 11:45. Loyola's Meghan Wood broke up the Gaels scoring with a three-point play at 11:18 for a 41-36 score before a 10-1 run by Iona. Wood again broke up scoring with her lay-in at 6:40 for the 51-39 score. After a two-for-two effort from the line by Weber, Grant hit one-for-two from the stripe for the 53-40 score. On the next Loyola possession, Sholokhova fed the ball in to Vanessa Ruffin for the 53-42 mark at 4:38. The Greyhounds would never get any closer in the 64-49 final.
DiClemente led the Greyhounds with a career-high of 16 points. Dunn added eight points. Both Sholokhova and Wood scored six. Wood, Sholokhova and Davis each pulled down a game-high five rebounds.
Weber led Iona with 23 points. DeFlaco and Headen each added 13 while DeFalco registered 12 rebounds.
The Greyhounds return home for their final game of the season in Reitz Arena on Friday, February 23 to host Canisius. It will be the final home game for seniors Brittany Dunn, Jill Glessner, Vanessa Ruffin and Ebony Toliver.
