Marist Gets Past Women's Basketball, 61-58

BALTIMORE, MD - Despite holding a lead for more than 37 minutes and posting four players in double figures, the Loyola College women's basketball team fell to Marist Tuesday night, 61-58. The Greyhounds fall to 11-12 and 7-7 in the conference with the loss while the top-ranked Red Foxes' improve to 15-9 overall and 11-4 in the MAAC.

Loyola came out strong Tuesday, holding Marist scoreless for the first 3:17 of the game and holding a 17-4 advantage, their largest lead, at 12:56 in the first half. The Greyhounds held onto a large lead until Marist went on a 17-4 run over the last eight minutes of play for a much smaller Loyola lead at 29-26.

Throughout the second half, the two teams battled back and forth, with Marist tying the game for the first time at 34-34 with 14:39 remaining on the clock. Loyola took back the lead on the next shot with a lay-up by Jackie Valderas from Meghan Wood at 14:05.

The Greyhounds held onto a lead for until 9:43 remaining. The two teams sat at 40-38 for nearly three-minutes until Vicki Wancel's free throws gave Marist another tie score at 40 all.

Loyola again fought back, building up as much as a five-point lead behind Valderas' offensive and defensive efforts but the squads would tie twice more before Marist got their first lead with a 57-56 score with 2:59 remaining in the game. Alisa Kresge went to the line after being fouled on a three-pointer, making two of the three to build the Marist lead up to three. Katie Scherle went to the line on the following play, making both shots for a one-point game, 59-58 Marist but Marist senior Vicki Wancel made a layup with just 18 seconds remaining to seal the victory ay 61-58 for the Red Foxes'.

Valderas tied a career-high 14 points off the bench for the Greyhounds, adding three rebounds, three assists, two blocks and four steals. Lindsay Cobb, Krystle Harrington and Jill Glessner each added 10 points. Ten points was a career-high for Glessner as well. Both Glessner and Harrington pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.

For Marist, Maureen Magairty led the game with 17 points and eight rebounds and was followed by Kristen Keller with 16 points and a game-high nine boards. Also in double-figures for the Red Foxes' was Stephanie DelPreore with 10.

Both teams shot 23-for-56 from the field while Marist hit two more three-points and one more foul shot than Loyola for the victory. The Greyhounds out-rebounded the Red Foxes' 38 to 35.

Loyola next travels to Niagara on Friday, February 20 and Canisius on Sunday, February 22 before returning to Reitz Arena to close the regular season with Saint Peter's (February 25) and Fairfield (February 29)
