Women's Basketball Falls to Siena on the Road

Loundonville, N.Y. - Siena's Laura Menty converted a three-point play with seven seconds left to give the Saints a one-point lead and Katelyn Dooley hit two free-throws with one second left for a 63-60 win over Loyola Sunday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action. The `Hounds fall to 14-9 on the season and 9-5 in the MAAC while the Saints improve to 11-12 and 7-7 in the league.

Loyola led for the first five minutes of the contest before the Saints scored five straight points and took a 10-7 lead with 10:35 to play in the first. A basket by Jackie Valderas cut the margin to 10-9 and Brittany Dunn stole the ball at Siena's end and went coast-to coast for the lay-up to give the Greyhounds an 11-10 at 9:32. The Saints reclaimed the lead with a seven-point run sparked by a three by Melissa Manzer. Siena's run set the score at 17-11 with 6:51 left in the first half. Loyola lowered that margin to two with back-to-back baskets, one from Krystle Harrington and another by Katie Scherle, for the 17-15 score with 4:54 on the clock. The Greyhounds never got any closer in the half and Siena hit 8-of-8 shots from the free-throw line for a 33-24 half-time score.

Siena got up by 13, 41-28 with 16:09 left to play before Loyola began to chip away. A jumper by Dunn and a put-back basket by Jill Glessner cut Siena's lead to single digits and a 2-for-2 effort from the free-throw line by Lauren Troupe set the score at 41-34 with 14:15 left. The Saints added three points on a basket from Dooley and a free-throw by Shondaya Burrell for a 44-34 score. Harrington hit a free-throw and Dunn another basket off a Siena turnover cut the margin to 44-37. Burrell added a basket for Siena before a three-point play by Troupe got Loyola within six, 46-40 with 10:47 to play. After a Siena basket, the `Hounds put together a six-point run with baskets from Valderas, Troupe and Glessner to cut the Siena lead to 48-46. Whitney Cave tried to keep Loyola at bay with a basket at 6:55 before a three-point play by Valderas and a lay-up by Harrington gave the `Hounds the lead, 51-50 with 6:20 on the clock. The squads went back and fourth, tying the game three more times over the next five minutes before Troupe's basket at 1:07 gave Loyola a 60-58 lead. The Greyhounds held that lead for a full minute before Menty's three-point play gave Siena a 61-60 lead. Dooley hit two free-throws to seal the contest at 63-60.

Siena outrebounded the Greyhounds, 35-19 and shot 18-for-22 from the free-throw line to Loyola's 8-for-11 effort. The Greyhounds forced 24 Siena turnovers while committing 14 of their own.

Harrington scored a team-high 15 points for the Greyhounds while Dunn added 12 and Troupe scored 11 points.

Manzer score 15 points to lead four Siena players in double-figures. Cave pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.

Loyola travels to Manhattan Thursday, February 16 for its second straight road game.
