Baltimore, Md. - The with three players in double-figures, the Loyola College women's basketball team topped Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponent Saint Peter's 72-61 at Reitz Arena Thursday night. The Greyhounds improve to 14-9 overall and 9-4 in the conference while the Peahens fall to 10-12 and 6-7 in the league.
Saint Peter's jumped out to an early 9-0 lead at 16:55 but Loyola worked over the next six minutes to erase that deficit. With the Peahens up by three, 17-14, with 10:31 on the clock, Loyola went on a 17-5 run to take the lead. Junior center Vika Sholokhova scored six points in the run, completing two three-point plays. Four other Greyhounds made baskets in the run to claim the 29-22 advantage. Jill Glessner, Brittany Dunn and Erica DiClemente each scored two-point baskets while Siobhan Prior added a three. Loyola continued to hold the advantage and earned their largest lead with a 6-0 run to close the half, 39-29. Glessner scored two baskets in the final three minutes while Grant added the third.
After a basket by Saint Peter's Elyse Siciliano to start the second half, the Greyhounds outscored the Peahens 9-2 over two and a half minutes to take a 48-33 lead. Loyola did not allow a single basket from the floor in that time with SPC only capitalizing on two free-throws from Johnell Burts. Glessner recorded a three-point play for Loyola in the run while Dunn and Ebony Toliver each added a basket. From that point on the Greyhounds did not allow their lead to dip below 10-points and got up by as much as 18, 61-43 at 9:16. Loyola finished with an 11-point margin with the 72-61 victory.
Sholokhova led four players in double-figures with 20 points. She added 13 rebounds for her second consecutive double-double and her third of the season. Glessner added 15 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Dunn recorded 14 points, shooting 6-for-8 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the charity stripe. She added four assists, three rebounds and two steals. Grant came off the bench to add seven points and five boards. Meghan Wood added nine rebounds while scoring four points.
Siciliano also recorded a double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds for Saint Peter's. Tania Kennedy added 16 points while Burts recorded nine points and seven assists.
The Greyhounds remain at home, hosting Rider on Sunday, February 11 at 12:00. The Loyola athletic department will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sport Day on Sunday as well. The game will be broadcast by the MAAC Television and can be seen locally on MASN.
