Riverdale, N.Y. - The Loyola College women's basketball team lost its third straight game, 55-49 to Manhattan Thursday night at Draddy Gym. Katie Scherle led all scorers with 20 points. The Greyhounds fall to 7-13 overall and 6-5 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference while the Jaspers improve to 9-11 and 5-6 in the conference.
In the first half, Manhattan built up a 21-6 lead with four three point baskets by 12:52. Katie Scherle broke a three minute scoring drought for Loyola with two free throws before Abby Dellinger hit the Jaspers fifth three for a 24-8 Manhattan lead at 11:46. Scherle scored the next six straight Greyhound points in a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 26-16. The teams exchanged baskets before Kerri-Lynn Orsini scored the final three points of the half for a 30-19 Mahanttan lead.
Scherle scored the first four points of the half to cut Manhattan's lead to 30-23 at 18:47 and after two Manhattan free-throws added another basket to keep the deficit at seven with 16:20 remaining. The Jaspers scored their first field goal of the half at 13:12 and continued it with five more points for a 7-0 run and a 39-25 lead at 10:40. Manhattan kept the lead in double-digits despite defensive pressure by Loyola. The Greyhounds scored the final eight points of the contest, with six of those points coming from Krystle Harrington for the 55-49 final.
Scherle led all scorers with 20 points and was the lone Greyhounds in double-figures. Harrington had nine points, four assists and four steals while Brittany Dunn added seven points and six steals.
Manhattan was led by Gabrielle Cottrelll and Joaann Nwafili with 11 points each. Serra Sangar followed with 10.
Loyola returns to Reitz Arena on Sunday to host Canisius in the first half of double header with the men's squad. The women's tip-off is set for 12:00.
