Buffalo, N.Y. - Senior Meredith Tolley had 20 points as the Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team defeated Canisius College, 71-65, today at the Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo, N.Y. The Greyhounds made 22 free throws to close the game.
Loyola is now 11-10 and 8-2 in the MAAC, while Canisius falls to 6-15 and 2-8 in the conference.
Tolley led the Greyhounds with 20 points. She had 15 points in the first half alone. Junior Miriam McKenzie had her sixth double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore Katie Sheahin added 14 points and sophomore Alyssa Sutherland had 11 points.
The score was tied early at five in the first half before the Golden Griffins took a three point lead but the Greyhounds answered with a Tolley three-pointer to tie the game at eight.
The Greyhounds then went on a 5-0 run with points coming from Sutherland and Sheahin but Canisius answered right back and the game was tied at 13. The game was tied at 23 with 4:39 left in the first half before Loyola went on a 8-4 run to give the Greyhounds a four-point lead going into half at 31-27.
Coming out of the half, the Greyhounds went on a 8-0 run with points coming from Sutherland, graduate student Erica DiClemente and McKenzie. McKenzie gave the Greyhounds a 10-points lead with a steal and layup. The Golden Griffins answered with a jumper by Steph MacDonald cut the Greyhounds lead to eight.
Melissa Gardner for Canisius had a steal and layup to cut the Greyhounds lead to four but a McKenzie three-pointer took back an eight point lead. The Greyhounds had a defensive stop and a Sutherland three-pointer gave Loyola a nine point lead.
Sutherland had a couple of free throw to give Loyola an 11-point lead with under two minutes left in the game. The Golden Griffins answered with a layup by Jamie Ruttle to cut the lead to nine. DiClemente made a couple of free throws to give Loyola a 11-point lead but a thee pointer by Canisius MacDonald cut the lead to eight.
The Golden Griffins were able to cut the lead to six but the Greyhounds made their free throws. Loyola ended the game making 22 free throws.
Canisius was led by Steph MacDonald who had 17 points and Ashley Durham had 10 points and eight rebounds. The Greyhounds shot 40.8 percent for the game to Canisius 41.7 percent.
The Greyhounds return to Reitz Arena on Friday to compete against Rider at 7:00 p.m.
