Baltimore, Md. - The Loyola College women's basketball team fell to Fairfield Sunday night. 68-54 in Reitz Arena. With the loss, the Greyhounds fall to 7-12 overall and 6-4 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Stags improve to the same overall record and are even in conference play at 5-5.
In the first half, the squads went back and forth to start before a 7-0 run for Fairfield was sparked by a three pointer by Candice Lindsay at 11:55. The Stags ended the run with a 19-12 lead at 10:15. Loyola battled back with an 8-2 run to cut the lead to 21-20 at 6:56. But it was another three by Lindsay that pushed the Stags lead back up with the `Hounds never getting closer than that four points for the remainder of the half. Fairfield held their largest advantage 39-29 at the close of the half after a third three pointer by Lindsay as the clock ran out.
Early in the second half with the score at 41-31, Fairfield went on an 11-2 run that included five points by Cathy Dash before Vanessa Ruffin ended a nearly six minute scoring drought for Loyola at 13:02 for a 50-30 score. Fairfield got up by as much as 60-40 with 7:06 left to play before the Greyhounds went on a 10-point spurt that was sparked by Tynisha Davis. Back-to-back baskets by Janelle McManus ended Loyola's run for a 65-50 score and the Greyhounds never got any closer. Fairfield went to the line for eight shots in the final four minutes, hitting just three free throws but it was enough for a 68-54 final.
Loyola was led by Jackie Valderas who tallied her second career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds off the bench. She also added four blocks. Valderas was the lone Greyhoun in double-figures as Katie Scherle was next in line with nine points.
Fairfield was led by McManus and Lindsay with 17 points each. The two combined for a 5-for-6 effort from behind the arc.
Loyola returns to the road as the face Manhattan on Feb. 3 at 7:00.
