Poughkeepsie, NY - The Loyola College women's basketball team fell to Marist, 64-56, Thursday night in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match-up at the McCann Center. The Greyhounds fell to 8-10 overall and 4-5 in the MAAC with the loss while the red Foxes' improved to 11-7 overall and 7-2 in the conference.
After exchanging several baskets early in the first half, Marist went on a 12-2 run to gain a 17-8 lead with 11:43 left. After three free-throws by Jill Henn and a basket by Lauren Troupe, Loyola cut the lead to six at 10:27. The two teams exchanged baskets again but Loyola would never get closer in the first half with the Red Foxes' holding a 33-22 half-time advantage.
The two teams battled throughout the second half before a three-pointer by Troupe with 1:51 remaining cut the Marist lead to five. Marist's Nna Vecchio would go to the line eight times in the last minute, making seven of those shots, to seal the win.
Loyola shot 10-for-10 from the charity stripe in the first half and 14-for-16 on the night. Rebounding was even with Loyola pulling down 41 and Marist at 40. The Greyhounds committed 20 turnovers in the game with Marist scoring 18 points on turnovers.
Troupe led the game with 20 points and was followed by Henn for Loyola with 11. Point-guard Krystle Harrington scored 10 points and added three rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals. Katie Scherle and Jackie Valderas each pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
Kristin Keller led Marist with 19 points off the bench and was followed by Vecchio with 16 and Stephanie Del Preore with 11 points and eight rebounds.
The Greyhounds will travel to Iona on Saturday, January 31st for a 2:00 game.
