Niagara University, N.Y. - The Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team defeated Niagara 55-44 tonight at Gallagher Center in Niagara University, N.Y. The Greyhounds were led by junior Miriam McKenzie and graduate student Erica DiClemente who each recorded 12 points.
Loyola moves to 10-10 overall and 7-2 in the MAAC, while Niagara falls to 1-19 overall and 0-9 in the conference.
McKenzie had a double-double for the night with 12 points and 11 rebounds. This is her fifth double-double of the season. Senior Meredith Tolley had nine points and seven rebounds.
The Greyhounds shot 34.5 percent for the game to a Niagara 30.5 percent.
In the first half, the game was tied at 14 before Loyola went on a four point run with free throws and a jumper by DiClemente. The Purple Eagles scored by a layup by Meghan Waterman and came within two. The Greyhounds then went on a 10-0 run with points coming from Tolley, McKenzie, freshman Nneka Offodile and sophomore Alyssa Sutherland.
Niagara answered with a jumper by Waterman but the Greyhounds took a 13-point lead going into half with a buzzer beater three-pointer by sophomore Katie Sheahin.
Coming out of half, the Greyhounds went on a 4-0 run to take a 16-point lead. Niagara answered with a 4-0 run but a three-point by McKenzie gave Loyola a 15-point lead with 14:00 left in the game.
The Purple Eagles went on a 5-2 run that was ended by a freshman Nicole Krusen three-pointer. Then Niagara cut the lead to seven on a 7-0 run with 6:46 left in the game.
The Greyhounds then went on a 7-0 run with point coming from Tolley and DiClemente to give Loyola a 14-point lead. Niagara answered with free throw shots by Liz Flooks but the Greyhounds answered with a layup by McKenzie. Niagara answered but that wasn't enough.
The Greyhounds will continue road play on Sunday as they visit Canisius for a 1 p.m. tip-off. Loyola will be back at Reitz Arena on Friday, February 4, against Rider at 7:00 p.m.
