Baltimore, Md. - The Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team had three players in double digits as the Greyhounds defeated Fairfield tonight in Reitz Arena, 54-52. Loyola ended a nine game losing streak with the Stags tonight. The last time the Greyhounds defeated Fairfield was the 2005-06 season.
The Greyhounds move to 4-1 in the conference and 7-9 overall while the Stags are 3-2 in the MAAC and 10-5 overall.
The game was tied at 16 in the first half before an Erica DiClemente layup gave the Greyhounds the lead. Loyola went up by four with an Alyssa Sutherland jumper. Fairfield was able to get a couple of baskets but the Greyhounds had the lead going into half, 22-21.
The Stags took the lead early after halftime but Loyola was able to answer with a Katie Sheahin jumper. The Greyhounds soon went on a 8-0 run to give Loyola a seven point lead.
The biggest lead of the half was nine with a couple of Sheahin free throws. The Stags started to make baskets and were able to come within one with 5:29 left in the game by a Katelyn Linney three pointer.
The Greyhounds soon answered back with a Meredith Tolley three pointer but the game was tied at 48 with 3:51 left in the game. The Greyhounds soon went up by two with a Miriam McKenzie layup.
The Stags answered right back with a Taryn Johnson layup but the Greyhounds scored with a couple of McKenzie free throws.
The Greyhounds went up by four with 45 seconds left in the game with a DiClemente jumper. Fairfield answered with a Desiree Pina but that wasn't enough.
Loyola was led by Sheahin who had 17 points and six rebounds. McKenzie added 14 points and six rebounds and DiClemente had 12 and five rebounds.
The Greyhounds shot 46-percent from the field to the Stags 38-percent. Fairfield was led by Taryn Johnson who had 19 points.
The Greyhounds will be back in action on Sunday as Loyola hosts Iona at 2 p.m. in Reitz Arena.
