Women's Basketball Falls to Liberty, 70-63

Lynchburg, Va. - The Loyola College women's basketball team fell in their final non-conference game of the season,70-63 in a physical battle with Liberty Tuesday night at the Vines Center. The Greyhounds fall to 8-5 on the season with the loss while the Lady Flames improve to 8-4 with the win.

The game was slow to start offensively but Liberty took a 7-0 advantage, holding Loyola scoreless in nearly six minutes of play. The Greyhounds nabbed their first basket at 14:15 when Jill Glessner was able to get a jump shot to go. The Greyhounds worked to decrease their deficit and got within two, 11-9 on a basket by Tynisha Davis with 11:19 left in the half. The Lady Flames went on to score the next seven points including a three by Molly Frazee to take a 16-9 lead. Davis answered with a three of her own at 8:43 for the 16-12 mark but Frazee added another three-point basket to claim the 19-12 advantage. Loyola scored the next six straight points, the first four from Brittany Dunn to cut the Liberty lead to one, 19-18 with 5:44 to play in the first. The squads exchanged baskets the next two trips down the floor for a 23-22 Liberty advantage with just under four minutes to play in the half. The Lady Flames went on to outscore the Greyhounds 7-2 to finish the half with a 30-24 halftime lead.

Loyola erased the deficit quickly in the second half by not allowing a Liberty field-goal for five minutes of play. The Greyhounds scored seven points, five from Krystle Harrington, in that time while allowing Liberty to score on a free-throw for to tie the game at 31. The Lady Flames scored the next 10 straight points to retake the lead and would lead by as much as 14 with three minutes left to play. Megan Frazee's basket at 2:46 gave the Lady Flames a 66-52 lead before Jackie Valderas nabbed a layup for Loyola and teammate Lauren Troupe nailed a three to cut the margin to 66-57. After a set of Liberty free-throws, Harrington scored on a drive to the basket and Dunn added a free-throw for the 68-60 mark with 49 seconds left. The Lady Flames got another trip to the line and made both for a 70-60 lead. Harrington nailed a three as time ran out but it was not enough for the Greyhounds in the 70-63 loss.

Loyola forced 27 Liberty turnovers while only committing 15 of their own. Liberty out-rebounded the Greyhounds 47-22. Both teams shot in the 40's with Loyola leading 46.4% to 42.6% while the Lady Flames hit 19-of-24 at the charity stripe and the Greyhounds hit just 6-of-16.

Harrington led Loyola with 16 points. Troupe added 14 and Dunn scored 11.

Megan Frazee recorded a double-double with 24 points and 13 rebounds. She was followed by Karoline Piotriewcz's 14 points and nine rebounds. Molly Frazee and Roli-Ann Nikagbatse each added 10.

Loyola returns to conference action on Saturday, January 14 at Saint Peter's.
