Team Efforts Spurs Women's Basketball To 66-52 Victory Over Siena

LOUNDONVILLE, NY - A team effort from the Loyola College women's basketball team earned them a 66-52 victory over Siena on Sunday afternoon at the Alumni Recreation Center. The Greyhounds improve to 6-7 overall at 2-2 in the MAAC while the Saints fall to 7-7 and 3-2 in the conference.

The two teams battled back and forth for the first 15 minutes of the first half before sophomore Katie Scherle broke the lead open at six with a 25-19 score nearing the end of the half. Siena's Natalie Marchino brought the Saints within four at the close of the half for a 25-21 Loyola lead at the break. Scherle scored 12 of the 'Hounds 25 points in the first half.

Siena battled back early in the second half and took a one-point advantage on another basket by Marchino at 13:41 before Loyola took that lead right back on a jump shot by freshman Brittany Dunn from the right corner at 13:24.

Scherle built the Greyhound lead up again with back-to-back jump shots at 9:53 and 9:09 for a 42-37 score.

The Saints continued to pound with Marchino's three at 8:44 for a two-point game and two free-throws from Katelyn Dooley for another tie, this time at 42. Loyola then went on a 10-2 run for a 52-44 lead. A basket from the deep right corner by senior Lindsay Cobb clinched the game with 1:37remaining.

Loyola shot 50.9% Sunday to Siena's 38.5%. The 'Hounds also shot 83% from the free-throw line. They played tremendous team basketball, accumulating 21 assists for 28 baskets.

"This was a great effort from top to bottom by our team," head coach Candy Cage said of the win. "Everyone came to play today."

Loyola was led by Scherle with a total of 16 points. She was followed by Cobb with 14 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Sophomore point guard Krystle Harrington hit a career-high with nine assists.

Loyola held Siena's leading scorer, Liene Jansone with 14 points. She was followed by Marchino with 13.

The Greyhounds will host Canisius and Niagara at home next week on Friday, Jan. 16 and Sunday, Jan. 18, respectively.
