Baltimore, Md. - Junior Miriam McKenzie had 15 points and nine rebounds as the Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team fell to Marist, 59-43, today in Reitz Arena for Field Trip Day.
The Greyhounds move to 6-9 and 3-1 in the MAAC, while Marist is 13-2 and 4-0 in the conference.
The Red Foxes had the lead coming into half 27-18 and went on a 7-1 run that was ended by a sophomore Katie Sheahin lay-in. With another run at 10:38 left in the second half Marist had a 13 point lead.
"Marist is a great program and it is going to be tough to beat them for anybody," said Head Coach Joe Logan. "If you want to win this tournament you are going to have to play them three times."
The Greyhounds started to come back and went on a 10-7 run to cut the game to eight, which is the closest for the second half. Marist end the game on a 14-8 run.
McKenzie had 15 points for the Greyhounds, with seven coming in the first half. Senior Meredith Tolley added eight points and sophomore Katie Sheahin and McKenzie led on the boards with nine.
"When it gets tough Miriam is going to get the ball and she can make some acrobatic shots," said Logan.
The Red Foxes had three players in double digits points and led by Brady Gang who had 15. Erica Allenspach added 14 points and Corielle Yarde had 13.
In the first half, Marist went on a 6-0 run before the Greyhounds scored off a Meredith Tolley three pointer. The Greyhounds went on a 10-4 run to tie the score at 12.
The Red Foxes soon after went on a 13-0 run before Loyola scored off a McKenzie lay-in. The Greyhounds ended the first half on a 4-2 run with a half time score of 27-18.
The Greyhounds will compete on Friday in a double header action against Fairfield. The women tip-off at 4:30 p.m. and men will follow at 7:00 p.m.
