BALTIMORE, MD - Loyola went on a 19-0 run early on in the first half en route to a 72-50 win Saturday night at the RAC Arena in women's basketball action. The Greyhounds improved to 5-6 in their final non-conference game of the season while the Retrievers fell to 0-9.
With UMBC up 3-1 at 19:22, Loyola went on a 19-0 run sparked by a jump shot by sophomore Katie Scherle. Krystle Harrington scored three of the next four baskets to continue the run while Lauren Troupe also added six points in the spread before UMBC's Courtney Doughman hit one of her four three-point baskets to break the Retrievers scoring drought.
The Greyhounds held their largest lead of the night at 7:45 left in the second half after senior Lindsay Cobb drilled a three-pointer for a 60-36 score.
Loyola shot an outstanding 52.6 percent from the field as well as outrebounding the Retrievers 32-26.
Loyola posted three players in double figures, led by Troupe with 15. She was followed by Scherle with 12 and Harrington with 11, from a 5-for-5 effort from the floor and 1-for-1 from the line. Freshmen Meghan Wood and Jill Glessner each added seven points in the effort. Troupe also pulled down a game-high eight rebounds while Cobb dished out five assists and Glessner recorded four steals.
UMBC was led by Sharri Rohde with 17 points for a game-high while Maria Santos and Doughman each scored 12 for the Retrievers.
Loyola will begin its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference schedule on Tuesday, January 6, 2004 by visiting Rider. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
