Eugene, Oregon - Former Loyola track coach Julie Culley finished in fourth place last week in the women's 5,000 meter run on Hayward Field at the USA Track and Field 2009 National Championship.
Culley, who headed the Loyola program from 2004-06 before leaving to pursue her dreams of competing in the Olympics, finished the race in 15:33.92, just 13 seconds back of the winner Kara Goucher.
"I am definitely happy with the race," said Culley to Flotrack.org. "We ran pretty hard and this is just my second 5,000, so I'll take the result. I am going to keep working hard and head overseas and see what happens."
A native of Lebanon, N.J., and a 2004 Rutgers graduate, Culley is hoping to represent Team USA this August at the IAAF World Championships in Berlin, Germany. It will be the first major international track and field event in the Olympic stadium since the 1936 Olympic Games.
