Newport News, Va. - The Loyola men's and women's tennis teams earned good results on day one of the Hampton Roads Collegiate in Newport News, Va. on Friday afternoon and evening. The Greyhounds advanced on both the doubles and singles side in the highly competitive regional tournament.
Freshmen Peter Edgar and Tom Arasz advanced to their respective singles' round of 16 with opening round victories in Flight D play. Edgar won a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 three-set match over Imran Nayeem while Arasz won a hard-fought 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 match against Kevin Pepper.
Both Edgar and Arasz fell in the Round of 16, falling to Jared Smoke and Kevin Cretella in straight sets. Freshmen Matt Rodgers and Chris Langley also played in Flight D. Rodgers dropped a tough 6-3, 7-6(3) decision while Langley fell 6-2, 6-0.
In doubles competition, Koch and Rogers cruised to an 8-0 victory in Flight C and advanced to the Hampton Roads Quarterfinals. Edgar and freshman Matt McDaniel dropped an 8-4 decision in Flight D play.
On the women's side, the freshmen tandem of Caitlyn Day and Stephanie Dunn advanced to the Flight B doubles semifinals with an 8-3 in the Round of 16. Freshmen Lauren Cassle and Kerri Swan also teamed up and played in Flight C doubles, but fell in the Round of 16.
In women's singles' competition, Day led the charge with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Lauren Graham in flight B to advance to the Semifinals on Saturday. Swan played Anna Khoor in Flight B play and fell 6-2, 6-1. Dunn and Cassle dropped a pair of matches in Flight C play.
The Greyhounds will continue play at the Hampton Roads Collegiate on Saturday with semifinal action on the doubles' side as well as Day in Flight B singles.
