Flushing, N.Y. - The Loyola men's tennis team dropped a close 4-3 decision to Saint Peter's in MAAC Tournament action on Saturday evening at the U.S. Open in Flushing, N.Y. The Greyhounds will now play Rider in the seventh place match on Sunday.
Loyola dropped the doubles point by the slimmest possible margin. The Greyhounds first captured an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles with junior Rob Palliser and freshman Tim Koch taking the match. Junior co-captains Scott Gannon and Ben Epstein took their No. 1 doubles match to the limit, falling 8-7 after a 7-3 tiebreaker.
In singles play, Koch defeated Andrew Maple in straight sets at No. 5, while freshman Peter Edgar won 6-1, 7-6 thanks to a 7-5 tiebreaker at No. 6. Palliser claimed a three set (1-6, 6-3, 10-8) victory at No. 4 to give Loyola three points on the day.
The Peacocks won Nos. 2 and 3 single in straight sets, leaving the deciding point at No. 1 singles. Gannon fell 6-4 in the first set before rebounding for a 6-4 win in his second set, leaving the match to the third and final set. St. Peter's Cprime Realista won the set, 10-6, winning the match for the Peacocks.
