Tennis Splits With Rider

Lawrenceville, N.J. - The Loyola men's and women's tennis teams split their final regular season MAAC conference matches at Rider on Monday afternoon. The women improve to 10-7 overall with their 5-2 win while the men are now 8-11 after falling 6-1.

On the women's side, the senior duo of Amy Nitch and Jessica Liberatore continued their winning ways at No.1 doubles, winning 8-5 to set up the doubles' point clincher at No.2. In that match, Stefanie Clay and Mallory Tarca won 8-2 to give Loyola an early lead.

Nitch went on to shut out Rider's Tanya Cota at No. 1 singles, winning 6-0, 6-0. The Broncs took No. 2 and No. 3 singles, however, and the Greyhounds looked to Nos. 4-6 to pull out the win. Clay delivered a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4 and Tarca picked up the `Hounds fourth point with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5. Senior Laura Cuti also won at straight sets, winning 6-0, 6-4 at No. 6.

On the men's side, Scott Gannon scored Loyola's only point, winning a three-set battle at No. 2 singles. Freshman Sean Wall also went three sets before falling in a 10-8 tiebreaker at No. 3 sinlges.

The men now turn their focus to the MAAC Championships, which begin this Friday at the U.S. Open in Flushing, N.Y. The women close their regular season at home with Towson on Tuesday and also begin MAAC Championship action in Flushing on Friday.
