Queens, N.Y. - The Loyola men's and women's tennis teams earned Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) wins over the Manhattan Jaspers on Friday night in Queens, N.Y. The men won 5-2 to improve their season record to 9-6, while the women captured a 6-1 victory to raise their season mark to 8-6 overall.
In men's competition the Greyhounds took the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3. It was Matt McDaniel and Tim Koch who won 8-1 at No. 2, while Dan D'Agostio and Jamie Russo gave Loyola the point with an 8-0 victory at No. 3.
In singles action, the Loyola men won all their matches in straight sets. After a disappointing 7-6, 7-5(6-4) loss for McDaniel at No. 2, the `Hounds stormed back with Koch taking No. 3, senior Doug Alban winning at No. 4, D'Agostino winning at No. 5 and Russo closing the men's competition with a straight set win at No. 6.
The Loyola women, meanwhile, swept the doubles competition. Kerri Swan and Joy Johnson teamed up for an 8-3 win at No. 1. Seniors Meaghan McKenna and Mallory Tarca earned an 8-6 win at No. 2, and the sophomore tandem of Caitlyn Day and Stephanie Dunn won 9-7 at No. 3.
Swan would get the momentum rolling in Loyola's favor in singles action, winning 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2. Her doubles teammate, Johnson, earned a hard fought 6-3, 6-7, 7-5 (6-1) win at No. 3, while Dunn (No. 4), McKenna (No. 5) and sophomore Lauren Cassle (No. 6) won in straight sets in their singles matches.
Both the men and women continue MAAC competition on the road tomorrow when they head further north to Fairfield to take on the Stags at 10 a.m. Those matches could be moved indoors due to rain, and would begin in the afternoon if necessary.
