March 12, 2008

Baltimore, Md. - The Loyola men's and women's tennis teams resumed the 2007-08 season with their spring opener against Baltimore foe Morgan State. Playing at the Clifton Park tennis courts, the women earned a 4-3 win over the Bears, while the men dropped a 6-1 decision.

The Greyhound women got the spring off to a good start with a point in doubles play. Sophomore Lauren Cassle and freshman Andie Keyser- Baker first claimed an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles. Then the No. 2 duo, consisting of sophomore Kerri Swan and freshman Joy Johnson, rallied for the point. Swan and Johnson trailed 4-7 before storming back to win 9-7, giving Loyola the 1-0 lead heading into singles play.

In women's singles' action, Swan earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 2, Cassle claimed a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6, while sophomore Stephanie Dunn sealed the victory with two-hour match at No. 5.

With the two teams tied at 3-3, Dunn played a three-set match that scored 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. The point gave Loyola the victory and improved the women's record to 3-0 in dual-meet action this season.

On the men's side, the Greyhounds were edged out in doubles play and could not recover in singles action. Senior Doug Alban and freshman Dan D'Agostino teamed up for a 9-7 win at No. 3 doubles, but a 9-7 loss at No. 2 (Tim Koch and Matt McDaniel) and an 8-6 loss at No. 1 (Scott Gannon and Ben Epstein) left the Greyhounds with no points from doubles play.

In singles action, Gannon won a 6-4, 7-6, 7-4 match at No. 1 to give Loyola its lone point of the contest. With the loss, the Greyhounds fall to 3-1 on the season.

Both the Loyola men and women return to action this Friday when they host Delaware State at the Butler Courts. The Greyhounds are also scheduled to host Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday.
