ORLANDO, FL - Freshman Omar Alfonso was named both the Offensive Player of the Year and MAAC Rookie of the Year at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference honors ceramony on Friday night. Alfonso was one of five Greyhounds recognized at the ceremony.
After leading Loyola and the MAAC in scoring, Alfonso was picked by conference coaches as the Offensive Player of the Year. He also led the nation in freshman scoring to earn him Rookie Honors.
"I'm very honored to recieve these awards," says Alfonso. "I'm fortunate enough to play a position that capitalizes on my teammates hard work. They deserve these awards, not me."
Both Alfonso and senior Steven Coleman made the first-team All-MAAC. Coleman is a senior co-captian and starter in the midfield.
The second-team All-MAAC includes freshman Gabriel Ortega, who also made the All-Rookie squad. The Greyhounds landed four on the All-Rookie team with Ortega and Alfonso joined by Michael Kolosvary and Danny Wheelan.
Loyola, 10-6-3 this season, is the No. 1 seed and regular season MAAC champion. The Greyhounds play Marist at 10 a.m. tomorrow in the MAAC Semifinal.
