BALTIMORE, MD - Freshmen Omar Alfonso and Justin Chelland pick up MAAC honors after leading the Greyhounds to wins over Canisius and Niagara last weekend. Chelland garners Defensive Player of the Week honors while Alfonso is named the MAAC Rookie of the Week.
Loyola won two games and picked up six critical points in the MAAC standings to finish the season with the No. 1 seed at the conference tournament. The Greyhounds, 9-6-3, 6-2-1 MAAC, swept their final weekend by a combined score of 6-0.
Chelland, the Defensive Player of the Week, earned his third and fourth shutouts of the season, not allowing a single goal in Loyola wins over MAAC foes Canisius and Niagara. Chelland picked up three saves in the win on Friday and added another save to his season total in Saturday's shutout. The freshman has 50 saves in nine games played and owns a 5-2-2 record as a starter.
Alfonso closed the regular season with two goals against both Canisius and Niagara. The Loyola freshman scored both Greyhounds goals versus Canisius on Friday and bettered that with two goals and an assist against Niagara on Saturday. Alfonso leads the team with 15 goals and 34 total points. His 15 goals is the most of any freshman in the country this season and he also has four game-winning goals for the Greyhounds.
Loyola will face the winner of No. 8 seed Canisius and No. 9 seed Iona on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. The entire 2003 MAAC Championship Tournament will be played at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla.
