Baltimore, Md. - The Loyola men's soccer team closes out the regular season with Manhattan and Saint Peter's at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field this Friday and Sunday. Friday's game with the Jaspers is slated for a 4 p.m. start while Sunday's match with the Peacocks will be televised by CN8 and kicks off at 1 p.m.
The Greyhounds, with 15 point in league play, need one win to clinch a spot in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament at Fairfield the first weekend in November. Loyola, 5-2 in the MAAC, is in the third place tie with Saint Peter's setting up a big game on Sunday.
Senior Omar Alfonso is Loyola's leading scorer this season with six goals and seven assists while senior goalkeeper Justin Chelland has matched his career high with five shutouts this season. The Greyhounds, who have three wins in their last four games, are also 2-0 at home in MAAC games this season, having not given up a goal in those matches.
Friday's game is against a Manhattan side with one conference win entering the weekend. The Jaspers are 3-14 overall, but defeated Iona at home 10 days ago. The Greyhounds have been historically strong against Manhattan, winning 16 of 19 matches and tying two others.
Sunday's game will be the last home contest for eight Loyola seniors. The Greyhounds face a Saint Peter's squad that as won its last two matches by a combined 7-0 count. The Peacocks are also 5-2 in the MAAC and need a win against either Rider on Friday or Loyola on Sunday to secure a spot in MAAC Tournament.
Loyola is 6-9-1 overall and has advanced to the MAAC tournament in each of its 17 years in the league. The Greyhound senior class, which has played in seven MAAC tournament games, consists of Alfonso, Chelland, Julian Cantillo, Rade Kokovic, Michael Kolosvary, Gabriel Ortega and captain Danny Wheelan.
