Baltimore, Md. - The Loyola men's soccer team travels to Fairfield and Iona for pivotal MAAC matches this weekend. The Greyhounds, currently 4-1 in the conference, play No. 15 Fairfield on Friday night and Iona on Sunday afternoon.
Led by senior Omar Alfonso and his 18 points this season, the Greyhounds have won four of their last five games. Last weekend, senior goalkeeper Justin Chelland registered shutouts over Siena and Marist to earn him MAAC Defensive Player of the Week. Freshman Jamie Darvill was named Rookie of the Week after scoring one goal and assisting on two other goals in the wins.
Friday's game at Fairfield will be against the preseason favorites. The Greyhounds, who were picked second in the preseason, are tied for second it the league standings with 12 points while Fairfield is alone in first with 15 points and a 5-0 MAAC record. The Stags are 10-3-1 overall and are the third ranked team Loyola has played this season.
Iona is 4-6-4 overall and 1-3-1 in the MAAC. The Gaels, however, are 2-2-1 at home and will be playing their final home contest of the season on Sunday.
Friday's game is slated for a 7 p.m. kickoff while Sunday's game is a 1 p.m. start.
