BALTIMORE, MD - Freshmen Omar Alfonso and Justin Chelland each earned conference Player of the Week recognition after an outstanding weekend of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action. Alfonso was named the men's soccer Offensive Player of the Week while Chelland took home Defensive Player of the Week honors.
The freshman duo helped the Greyhounds win two crucial MAAC games, defeating Fairfield in overtime and then beating Iona in the weekend's second contest. Chelland played an important role in goal, not allowing a single point.
Chelland made six saves against Fairfield and then stopped Iona with five saves. The freshman goalkeeper has started Loyola's last three games and has not giving up a single goal. He is 3-0 against the MAAC and 3-0-1 overall as a starter. Chelland also has a .939 save percentage with 31 saves on the year.
And while Chelland did his part in the cage, Alfonso surly did his on the offensive end. Against Iona on Sunday, Alfonso scored two goals and added two assists in the first 21 minutes of the game. Alfonso's two goals gave Loyola a 2-0 lead only 3:30 into the match.
Alfonso leads the conference in scoring this season with 10 goals and 23 total points. He also has a league-high six goals against MAAC teams.
Loyola's freshman combo has the Greyhounds sitting at 7-3-2 overall and 4-1-0 in the MAAC. Loyola travels to Manhattan this Friday for a 3 p.m. match with the Jaspers.
