Baltimore, Md. - The Loyola men's soccer team will play Canisius and Niagara in a pair of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference road matches this weekend in Buffalo. The Greyhounds, 1-0 in the MAAC this season, look to stay unbeaten in conference play with a Friday night game against the Golden Griffins and a Sunday afternoon contest with the Purple Eagles.
The `Hounds have won two of their last three games by shutout and carry that momentum into the heart of the conference schedule. Omar Alfonso, who scored the game winner at Rider last Saturday, leads the team with three goals and nine points this season, while senior goalkeeper Justin Chelland has 16 saves and two shutouts in his last two starts.
This weekend's opponents have been dominated by the Greyhounds of late. Loyola has nine-game win streaks against both Canisius and Niagara and has a combined 29-2-0 record against the upstate New York conference foes.
Friday's game with Canisius kicks off at 7 p.m. from Demske Sports Complex. The Golden Griffins are 1-1 in the MAAC this season with a win over Manhattan and a one-goal loss to Saint Peter's last weekend. Canisius is also 1-1 at home this season and begins a four-game homestand with the Greyhounds on Friday.
Niagara, meanwhile, is off to a great start in the MAAC, sporting a 2-0 record after road wins at Saint Peter's and Manhattan. The Purple Eagles, who are 4-5 overall, have not played a home game this season.
This weekend's road trip wraps up a stretch of eight consecutive road games for Loyola. The Greyhounds play four of their final six regular season games at home.
