Men's Soccer's Bannister, Jones Take MAAC Honors

Oct. 4, 2010

EDISON, N.J. - For the second time in as many weeks, two members of the Loyola University Maryland men’s soccer team earned weekly awards from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference as Phil Bannister was named MAAC Offensive Player of the Week and Gerwyn Jones was named MAAC Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced today.

The honors come after Loyola topped Villanova, 3-1, on September 29, before dispatching Adelphi, 3-1, on October 2. The team currently stands at 4-3-1 this season.

Phil Bannister (Wallsend, England/Monkseaton) earned his MAAC Offensive Player of the Week award after continuing his torrid play through non-conference play with two goals against Villanova and another against Adelphi. Bannister’s goals against Villanova came one minutes and nine seconds apart, including the eventual game-winner.

Bannister leads the team with seven goals in seven games and ranks second in NCAA Division I averaging a goal per game.

The six-point week included 12 shots and six shots on goal, and moved Bannister to ninth on the Loyola career goals list (37) and seventh on the Loyola career points list (103). Bannister currently shares the all-time Loyola assists record, with 29.

This week marks the second week in a row Bannister has earned the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week honor. The senior leads the team with seven goals on the year, 15 points, 36 shots and 17 shots on goal in seven games this season.

Gerwyn Jones (Caernarfon, Wales/Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen) received the MAAC Defensive Player of the Week honor for his strong play on both ends of the pitch, helping to hold Villanova and Adelphi to one goal each and notching both a goal and an assist against Adelphi.

Jones played every minute of both games and began on September 29 by recording a shot on goal against Villanova and anchoring a Loyola defense that allowed only one goal against the Wildcats. Jones then helped Loyola slow Adelphi by allowing one goal and the sophomore also pitched in on offense, assisting on Phil Bannister’s first goal before scoring one of his own (his first of the season)  in the game’s 61 st minute.

The award marks the first for Jones this season.

Last week, Phil Bannister and Kyle Wittman (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall College) won MAAC Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively.

Loyola begins MAAC play this week with a pair of games at the Ridley Athletic Complex on Friday and Sunday. The Greyhounds first take on Manhattan at 7 p.m. on Friday before hosting Saint Peter’s on Sunday at 1 p.m.
