CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Loyola University Maryland freshman A. Mickey Watson has been named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week, as announced by the League office Monday.
Watson was instrumental in helping the Greyhounds to a 1-1 week, including a 1-0 upset win over No. 11 UMBC Saturday night in the Battle of Baltimore at Ridley Athletic Complex.
Watson anchored a backline that held the Retrievers, the 15th-ranked offense in the NCAA coming into the game, scoreless for the first time this season. Throughout the match, a previously unbeaten UMBC squad recorded 19 shots and 12 corner attempts, but Watson blocked three shots and was responsible for a number of clearances on the corner kicks to help junior goalkeeper Matt Sanchez post his second clean sheet of the season.
The left back from Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, also kept Darius Madison, a 2014 NCAA Champion and former striker at Virginia, without a point for the first time this season, snapping his three-game scoring streak for the Retrievers.
For the season, Watson has started all five games and played 460 of the possible 470 minutes.
Loyola (1-3-1) will return to action on Saturday when it travels to George Washington for a 1 p.m., kickoff.
