Norfolk, Va. - The Loyola men's soccer team heads to Norfolk, Va. this weekend to compete in the 31st annual Old Dominion Soccer Classic. The Greyhounds will take on the host Monarchs on Friday night at 7 p.m. and face William & Mary on Sunday at noon. All games will take place at ODU Soccer Stadium.
Loyola enters the weekend looking for its first win after five very competitive matches to start the year. The Greyhounds have been outscored by five total goals in their first five games and will have another test against an Old Dominion side currently ranked 13th in the nation.
Freshman Jamie Darvill leads all Loyola goal scorers with two this season. Darvill's goal and three shots on goal at American last Sunday earned him MAAC Rookie of the Week honors. Rade Kokovic and Omar Alfonso lead the team in points with five apiece. Both have one goal and three assists this season.
Old Dominion, who's only loss this season came to No. 1 Maryland, is 3-1-0 and is also led by a freshman scorer in Ambane Emmanuel (2 goals). Loyola leads the all-time series with ODU, 15-4-2, and has won the last two meetings.
Sunday's game with William & Mary pits the Greyhounds against one of only three teams on this year's schedule who hold a series edge on Loyola. The Tribe hold an 11-9-3 series edge, winning 2-1 at Loyola in 2004. William & Mary is 2-4-0 overall with all four losses coming to ranked opponents.
The Old Dominion Soccer Classic begins with William & Mary playing North Carolina-Greensboro on Friday at 4:30 p.m. The fourth and final game of the tournament will feature ODU and UNCG on Sunday following Loyola's match with William & Mary. Tickets are $5 for adults and $4 for children.
