EDISON, N.J. - Sophomore Vegard Vinje (Norway/Ullern Videregående Skole) has been named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week, as announced Monday by the league office.
Vinje scored the game-winning goal in the 85th minute to lift Loyola to a 1-0 victory over St. Francis (Pa.) in the squad's home opener on Saturday. The goal marked the first of Vinje's collegiate career.
With time ticking down, freshman Connor Thompson (Swindon, England/Cirencester Academy) dropped a pass to sophomore transfer Geaton Caltabiano (Lothian, Md./Mount St. Joseph's) who played a long through ball over the head of St. Francis' defense. Vinje then headed the ball over an onrushing Darius Motazed - the Red Flash's goalkeeper - inside 18 yards for the game-winning goal.
This weekly award marks the first collegiate honor for Vinje, while it the second time this season a Greyhound has been tabbed one of the conference's players of the week. Graduate senior goalkeeper Kyle Wittman was named the MAAC Defensive Player of the Week on Aug. 29.Loyola will return to action on Wednesday as it hosts Towson at 7 p.m. at Ridley Athletic Complex.
