Baltimore, Md. - Loyola freshman Phil Bannister and sophomore Tennant McVea have been named the MAAC Men's Soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week. Bannister and McVea led the Greyhounds to a pair of shutout wins over the weekend at the Loyola College "Black & Decker" Soccer Classic.
Bannister, who was named the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week, scored the game winning goal in Friday's 1-nil victory over Adelphi. He scored again in Sunday's 3-nil win over No. 23 Towson to give him four points on the weekend and land him on the All-Tournament Team.
McVea, the MAAC Defensive Player of the Week, was named Tournament MVP for helping Loyola earn its two shutouts. Sunday's blanking of Towson was the first time an opponent had held the Tigers scoreless in 25 straight matches. In addition to his defense, McVea scored the game-winner against Towson and was also named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week.
Overall, Bannister leads the Greyhounds in scoring this season with three goals and one assist, while McVea has two goals (both game-winning) on two shot attempts. Bannister was named MAAC Rookie of the Week after Loyola's season-opening wins over Princeton and Fordham.
The Greyhounds, now 4-0, host George Washington at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field this Friday at 5 p.m.
