Sept. 7, 2004

Baltimore, Md. - Sophomore Omar Alfonso was named the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week after guiding Loyola to a 3-2 overtime win over George Mason on Sunday. Alfonso, last season's MAAC Player of the Year, scored two goals including the game-winner only 20 seconds into overtime.Loyola, which opened the season with a tough 3-2 loss to Princeton last Friday, regrouped on Sunday with Alfonso leading the way. The sophomore from Staten Island, N.Y., scored the game's first goal in the sixth minute of competition. After a late George Mason goal, the game was tied at 2-2 and headed into overtime. Alfonso quickly ended the contest with his second goal of the season, taking a pass from senior Kevin Nash and firing a shot past the Patriots' goalkeeper at 90:20."I saw the ball in the air and it was going towards Kevin Nash," says Alfonso. "I had the better position so I told him to leave it. He was making a run, I gave it to him, he gave it back between two defenders. I took it one time and scored the ball."The Greyhounds, 1-1 this season, return to action this weekend at the George Mason Tournament. They face Robert Morris on Friday and No. 5 Santa Clara on Sunday. Friday's game is slated for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
