EDISON, N.J. - The Loyola University Maryland men's soccer team was picked to finish second in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference preseason poll, released today by the conference office, while junior Gerwyn Jones and sophomore Jamie Libby were named to the Preseason All-MAAC Team.
The Greyhounds received 86 total points in the coaches poll, just two shy of Iona, which was picked as the narrow favorite in the race for the 2011 MAAC men's soccer title. Fairfield was selected third with 73 points, with Siena finishing fourth with 66 points. Saint Peter's was fifth (60), followed by Marist (57), Niagara (41), Canisius (35), Rider (27) and Manhattan (17).
Jones, a junior back, was named to the Preseason All-MAAC Team after earning first-team All-MAAC honors last year. The Caernarfon, Wales native started all 18 games for the Greyhounds last year and led the team in minutes played, with 1,662. Jones anchored a back line that posted a MAAC-leading six shutouts last year.
Libby, a sophomore back, was also named to the preseason all-conference team. A 2010 MAAC All-Rookie Team honoree, the Romford, England native also earned MAAC Defensive Player of the Week honors (Oct. 11) and was tabbed the league's top rookie of the week (Sept. 13) last year. Libby led the Greyhounds' freshmen in minutes played and recorded three goals on the year.
Loyola will open its 2011 campaign this weekend, heading to Adelphi for a 7 p.m., game on Saturday. The Greyhounds' home opener is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m., against St. Francis (Pa.). Buy season tickets now!
The 2011 MAAC Championship will be played at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. All 10 league teams will attend this year's conference tournament from Thursday-Monday, Nov. 3-7.
