Men's Soccer Tabbed as Team to Beat for 2005 MAAC Title

Edison, N.J. - Loyola College, which has earned 12 MAAC men's soccer regular season titles and 10 championship crowns since 1989, has been chosen to win the conference crown once again this season in a preseason poll voted on by the league's 10 head coaches.

Loyola earned the top spot with 92 points in the poll, 12 points ahead of second-place Marist College (80). Fairfield University was picked third with 78 points, and Saint Peter's College was fourth with 76 points. Iona College placed fifth (46), followed by Canisius College (45), Rider University (43), Siena College (37), Niagara University (30) and Manhattan College (23).

Marist's Keith Detelj (Sayville, N.Y.) has been chosen as the 2005 MAAC Preseason Player of the Year. Detelj, the 2004 MAAC Championship Most Valuable Player, led the league in scoring last season with 11 goals and three assists for 25 points.

Joining Detelj at forward are Fairfield's Vasilis Androutsos (Toronto, Ont.) and Loyola's Omar Alfonso (Staten Island, N.Y.). In the midfield are Fairfield's Alex Cunliffe (Lanchashire, England), Loyola's Rade Kokovic (Belgrade, Serbia) and Siena's Liam Welsh (Bronx, N.Y.). The backs are anchored by Canisius' Fabien Lewis (Fyzabad, Trinidad), Loyola's Gabe Ortega (Ozone Park, N.Y.), Marist's Ben Castor (Richboro, Pa.), Niagara's Mark Spooner (Mickleover, England) and Saint Peter's Sylvers Owusu (Newark, N.J.). Saint Peter's Patrick Nagawiecki (Barrington, Ill.) and Siena's Patrick Henry (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) round out the team at the goalkeeper position.
