Baltimore, Md. - The 2006 Loyola College men's soccer schedule will feature local rivals and regional powers once again. The schedule, released by Head Coach Mark Mettrick, includes defending national champion Maryland, as well as tournaments at Towson and Old Dominion.
"This year's schedule reflects our desire to play nationally competitive programs," says Mettrick. "It's a tough schedule, but we are looking forward to the challenge."
The Greyhounds open the year just a few miles north of main campus, playing Delaware and host Towson in a weekend tournament on August 25 and 27. Loyola will play host the following weekend, welcoming the Syracuse Orange and the Princeton Tigers to Alumnae Field.
The schedule sends Loyola on the road for the rest of September, with an away game at American on September 10 and the Old Dominion Classic taking place September 15 and 17. The Greyhounds will face host school ODU on Friday night and play William & Mary on Sunday afternoon.
The non-conference slate winds down with a match at Richmond and concludes at College Park with a showdown against last year's NCAA College Cup champion - the Maryland Terrapins.
"Anytime you play the national champion in your sport, it's a big deal," says Mettrick. "We're excited to play Maryland again and see the game as a great opportunity to measure our program against the current national champions."
Playing a challenging 12 away games to only six home games for the season, Loyola begins MAAC play at Rider on September 30 and finally returns home for a weekend series against Siena and Marist on October 13 and 15. The regular season concludes with Saint Peter's at home on Sunday, October 29.
The top four conference teams advance to the MAAC Championships, which will take place the first weekend of November at Fairfield. The Greyhounds have won six of the last seven regular season MAAC titles and have advanced the conference tournament in each of their 17 seasons in the league.
