Loyola Soccer Coaches To Throw Out First Pitch

Baltimore, Md. - Loyola soccer coaches Mark Mettrick and Joe Mallia will throw out the first pitch this Friday night at Camden Yards. Mettrick and Mallia begin the pre-game festivities at 7:25, before the Baltimore Orioles take on the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Official game time is 7:35 p.m.

Mettrick and Mallia have led two of Loyola's most successful programs over the past five years. Mettrick, who was named Loyola's head men's soccer coach in 2000, has won the MAAC regular season title each of his five seasons at Evergreen and took the Greyhounds to the NCAA "Sweet 16" in 2001.

Mallia, Loyola's head women's soccer coach since 1998, has taken the `Hounds to the last five NCAA Tournaments, winning the MAAC each of those seasons. This past year, his Greyhounds gave up one goal in conference play en route to their second-straight undefeated season in the league.

Both coaches played professionally in Baltimore - Mettrick with the Blast of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) and Mallia with the Spirit of the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL).

Friday's game begins a 12-game homestand for the Orioles. Erik Bedard (1-1) will be on the mound for Baltimore while Hideo Nomo (2-2) is the starting pitcher for Tampa Bay.
