BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland junior Hector Arellano has been named to the 2011 University Division Men’s Scholar All-East Region Honorable Mention Team, as announced by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
An engineering major with a 3.68 cumulative grade point average, Arellano played in all 18 games for the Greyhounds this season, starting 17, and was named to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference All-Academic Team at the end of the year.
In a 3-0 win at Manhattan on Oct. 7, Arellano scored his first collegiate goal – and game winner – when he headed in a corner kick from sophomore Stephen Dooley.
The midfielder from Virginia Beach, Va., then notched his first career assist against Rider on Oct. 15, when he set up sophomore Geaton Caltabiano for the game-winning goal. He also contributed an assist on Oct. 21 when he intercepted a pass in Canisius’ defensive end and chested the ball to Caltabiano for the game-winning goal.
To be nominated for the NSCAA Scholar All-Region Teams, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) throughout his career; start more than 50 percent of all games and be a significant contributor to the team; be a junior or above in academic standing at the current institution; be in his second year at the current school; and submit an official copy of a certified transcript.
