Orlando, Fla. - Freshman Phil Bannister scored the go-ahead goal in the 37th minute and freshman Eddie Dines added insurance in the 69th as Loyola defeated Siena, 2-nil, in Thursday's MAAC Quarterfinal match in Orlando, Fla. The Greyhounds, who improve to 16-3 on the year, will face Canisius in Saturday's Semifinal match.
Loyola took the early lead after a pair of unlucky bounces in the game's first 30 minutes. Bannister, who notched his team-leading 12th goal of the year, was able to control a deflection off the Siena keeper and score the rebound.
The Greyhounds, who defeated the Saints by a 2-0 score in a regular season match on October 5, would equal that final with Dines' eight goal of the season. Dines posted his tally at 69:48, scoring off an assist from senior Julian Cantillo.
Sophomore goalkeeper Milos Kocic continued his dominant play with his 13th shutout of the season. Kocic and the Loyola defense have 10 shutouts in their last 11 matches. The Greyhound keeper made three saves, including two in the second half on Thursday to preserve the victory.
For Bannister, his game-winner was also his team-leading seventh of the year. He leads the team with 28 points, while Dines is second with 19 points.
The Greyhounds will play in the MAAC Semifinals on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex. Their opponent, Canisius, entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed. Loyola defeated Canisius, 3-0, in their first match of the season.
