Baltimore, Md. - Freshman Eddie Dines scored twice as Loyola headed home three goals in Friday evening's 3-nil victory over Canisius at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field. The Greyhounds, who clinched the top seed in this year's MAAC tournament with the win, improve to 14-3 on the season and 7-1 in the conference.
The match began in a rather rapid pace as neither side shied away from open field play or physical contact. Early scoring opportunities never materialized and when Cansisius forward Colin Lynch was sent off in the 27th minute, the Greyhounds took control.
Dines struck in the 36th with a header off an excellent service from senior Camilo Correa. The Greyhound lead doubled before the half with freshman Mike Gill scoring a header into the upper left corner of the goal. Gill was set up by senior Julian Cantillo and freshman Phil Bannister, who's assist came from well outside the box.
"My goals was a total team effort," says Gill. "The guys worked the ball down the field and I was in position to score."
Loyola's 2-nil lead would hold firm in the second half - and in the 78th minute - Dines added insurance with his seventh goal of the season. This time, Correa set him up from the right side and Dines headed the ball across his body and into the far corner of the goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Milos Kocic registered the shutout with 90 minutes in goal. For Kocic and the Greyhounds, it marks the 11th shutout of the year and sixth at home this season. The Greyhounds, who are 7-0 at home, wrap up the regular season at home on Sunday when they host Niagara.
Sunday's match, which is also Senior Day, will begin at 1 p.m.
