Baltimore, Md. - Freshmen Phil Bannister and Eddie Dines scored goals and sophomore Jamie Darvill added a penalty kick score to give Loyola a 3-nil victory over conference foe Rider on Saturday afternoon at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field. With the win, the Greyhounds improve to 13-3 on the year and 6-1 in the MAAC.
Loyola opened the game with a few scoring opportunities that ended with an unlucky result. Bannister had the best of the opportunities when he found himself one-on-one with the Rider keeper in the 10th minute. His shot, however, sailed high, and at the half, neither team had registered a score.
The Greyhounds quickly responded in the second stanza and less than three minutes into the period, the scoreless tie was broken with Dines' fifth goal of the season. The score seemed if it would stand up with Loyola's stellar defensive play, and just to make sure, an insurance goal was added in the 72nd by Bannister.
The goal from Bannister was his team-leading 10th of the season, and came off a cross from freshman Glen Leitch to the near side of the goal.
Loyola added a third goal when a foul on Rider keeper Randall Zapolski gave Darvill a penalty kick opportunity. Darvill scored the goal and the Greyhounds earned themselves their second 3-nil victory this season.
The shutout is Loyola's 10th this season - all 10 of which have come with sophomore Milos Kocic goal. Kocic made two saves on Saturday to raise his season total to 58. The Greyhounds, who have won all seven of their matches at home this season, have seven wins in their last eight games - and all seven wins have come via shutout.
The Greyhounds will close out the regular season at home next Friday and Sunday when they host Canisius and Niagara at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field.
