New Rochelle, N.Y. - The Loyola men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to Iona in New Rochelle, N.Y. on Sunday afternoon. The Greyhounds, coming off a 1-nil victory at No. 15 Fairfield on Friday night, fall to 5-2 in the MAAC with Sunday's loss.
Loyola goalkeeper Justin Chelland, who registered three shutouts in his last three games, made seven saves against the Gaels on Sunday, including six in the first half. Iona, which held a 1-0 lead at the half, scored twice in the final 13:30 to pad their lead and margin of victory.
The Greyhounds, which took seven shots on the day, only had two shots on goal - one each from senior Omar Alfonso and freshman Jamie Darvill. The Gaels, who scored their first goal on the heels of a saved Penalty Kick by Chelland, ended the game with 19 shots and 10 shots on goal.
Chelland, who came into the game with consecutive shutouts against Siena, Marist and Fairfield, now has 75 saves on the year and a save percentage of .781.
With the loss, the Greyhounds drop their overall record to 6-9-1, while Iona improves to 6-6-4 overall and 3-3-1 in the MAAC. Loyola will close out the regular season at home next weekend, hosting Manhattan on Friday at 4 p.m. and Saint Peter's on Sunday at 1 p.m.
