Riverdale, N.Y. - Freshman Phil Bannister scored his fifth game-winning goal of the year in the 57th minute of action as Loyola edged Manhattan, 1-0, on Friday night in Riverdale, N.Y. The Greyhounds remain perfect in the MAAC with the win, running their overall record to 12-2 in the process.
Bannister, Loyola's leading scorer on the season, was held without a shot for the match's first 56 minutes, but a nice pass from freshman Eddie Dines inside the area set up a one-touch for Bannister.
The Greyhound defense, meanwhile, continued to stymie MAAC foes. Behind the play of co-captains Josh Taylor and Tennant McVea, the Loyola defense has now held opponents scoreless in its last six matches, including all five conference games this season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Milos Kocic registered his ninth shutout of the season, while matching a season high with six saves in goal. Kocic, who now has 50 saves this season, has been named the MAAC Defensive Player of the Week the past two weeks.
Bannister's score raises his season total to nine goals. He leads the team with 21 points. Dines, who picked up the assist in the win, has 11 points for the Greyhounds.
Loyola, 5-0 in the MAAC, will play its final regular season road match this Sunday at St. Peter's. The Greyhounds will face the Peacocks at 1 p.m. in Jersey City, N.J.
