Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - Freshman Phil Bannister scored two goal and added an assist as Loyola registered a 4-nil victory over MAAC for Marist in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. on Sunday afternoon. With the win, Loyola improves to 9-2 on the season and 2-0 in the MAAC.
Bannister, who scored two goals on three shot attempts, gave Loyola a 1-nil advantage in the 33rd minute after senior Julian Cantillo took a shot that bounced off the crossbar. The deflection, which came directly to Bannister, was then punched into the right corner for the early lead.
Sophomore Jamie Darvill and freshman Eddie Dines, who scored Loyola's goals in Friday's win at Siena, teamed up for a score in the 37th minute to double the Greyhound advantage before the half. The score, placed into the lower left corner of the goal, was set up by Dines and finished by Darvill.
Bannister would then set up Loyola's third score in the 73rd minute, a rebound that freshman Mike Gill converted into a goal. For Gill, it was his first college goal and only second shot attempt of the season.
The final score came in the 85th minute when Darvill began a counterattack with a long volley to Bannister. The breakaway left Bannister one-on-one with the keeper, and the score gave him a team-high seven goals for the year.
Loyola's defense, which posts its third straight shutout and sixth in 11 games this year, was once again anchored by keeper Milos Kocic, who made five saves in the win. Kocic and the Greyhounds have allowed seven total goals this season.
Bannister, with his five point day, now leads the team with seven goals, three assists and 17 points, while Kocic has a goals against average of 0.64.
Loyola will host preseason MAAC favorite Fairfield on Friday at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field.
