POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Sophomore John Dalziel scored the game-winner in the 69th-minute and classmate Vinnie Piscopo added an insurance goal in the 84th as Loyola defeated Marist, 2-0, at Poughkeepsie on Sunday afternoon.
The Greyhounds rebounded after their first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference loss of the year and posted their second shutout of the season. Freshman Justin Chelland, who made his second career start in goal, registered eight saves behind a strong Loyola defense.
After a scoreless first half, Dalziel had an opportunity to put Loyola on top with a direct kick at 69:53. The sophomore midfielder found the upper left corner of the cage for his third career goal and that was all the 'Hounds would need.
It was Piscopo, however, who officially put the game away with a breakaway goal at 83:39. Piscopo, who led the Greyhounds in scoring as a freshman last season, scored his first goal of 2003 by sliding the ball past Marist goalkeeper Mike Valenti.
The Greyhounds improve to 5-3-2 overall and 2-1-0 in the MAAC. They now have a 10-2 all-time record against the Red Foxes, who lose for the second time his season. Marist is 6-2-1 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play.
Loyola returns home next weekend and hosts Farfield (Oct. 10) and Iona (Oct. 12). Friday's contest versus Fairfield is slated for a 4 p.m. start.
