WORCESTER, Mass. - The Loyola University Maryland men's soccer team fell to Holy Cross, 2-0, in the 2014 Patriot League opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at Smith Soccer Stadium.
The Crusaders (3-2-2, 1-0-0 Patriot League) scored a goal late in the first half to take a 1-0 lead into the break when Ty Goncalves finished a cross from Nicholas Cestaro about eight yards out in the 42nd minute. The Greyhounds (3-3-2, 0-1-0) battled, creating four shot opportunities throughout the second half, as opposed to their one in the first, but were unable to find their equalizer before Holy Cross netted a second goal.
In the 80th minute, Nicholas Cestaro got into the box and finished a five-yard shot to put the Crusaders up, 2-0.
Throughout the game, Holy Cross held a 13-5 advantage in shots and a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. In goal, sophomore transfer Matt Sanchez came up with three saves, while Kevin Wright stopped two for the Crusaders.
Loyola will return to action on Saturday when it hosts Colgate in its first home conference game this season. Kick of is scheduled for 1 p.m., at Ridley Athletic Complex.
