ONEONTA, N.Y. - Jamie Darvill took a Danny Ankrah pass and scored from 15 yards out to break a scoreless tie and give the Loyola men's soccer team a 1-0 double overtime win over Syracuse on Friday evening at the 34th-Annual Mayor's Cup at Hartwick College.
Darvill, who put four of his eight shots on frame during the match, struck four minutes, 12 seconds into the second overtime period to score the game-winner for Loyola (2-1-1).
Kyle Wittman made seven saves, two in the second overtime, and recorded his second-straight shutout in goal for the Greyhounds.
"It was a hard-fought game, and we showed good character to dig deep and get a very good win for our team and our program," Loyola Head Coach Mark Mettrick said.
After Loyola was whistled for offsides more than two minutes into the second extra frame, Wittman turned away two Syracuse (1-3-0) chances.
The junior goalkeeper saved a shot by Kevin Su Chan-Yu-Tin at 102:31, and he then denied a shot by Tom Perevegyencev.
After the Orange's Hansen Woodruff drew a yellow card, Loyola's offense went on the attack. A surge ended with Ankrah crossing a pass to Darvill for the golden goal.
Wittman also fended off two Orange opportunities in the final seconds of regulation. Perevegyencev took a shot with 50 seconds remaining that was saved by Wittman, and Su Chan-Yu-Tin then missed wide with two ticks left.
His seven saves set a new career-high in his fourth game as a starter, eclipsing the six he had on September 4 versus Mount St. Mary's.
Syracuse, the two-time defending Mayor's Cup champion, outshot Loyola 21-14, but Loyola defense kept all but seven of the attempts off goal.
Darvill took a match-high eight shots and made Syracuse goalkeeper Ryan Jones work shortly into the game. Darvill's shot in the second minute was saved by Jones on what was the Greyhounds' only shot on goal in the first half.
Loyola's best chance in the first half came in the 36th minute when Darvill put a shot past Jones only to see if go off the post. He collected the rebound and had a second shot blocked.
Loyola continues action on Sunday, September 13, 2009, in the Mayor's Cup against host Hartwick at 2:30 p.m.
