BALTIMORE - Loyola men's lacrosse captain P.T. Ricci was named to the preseason first-team All American list on Monday in Inside Lacrosse's Face-Off Yearbook, while fellow captain Shane Koppens earned honorable mention recognition by the publication.
The senior duo was also recognized last week, as each was named to the first team All-ECAC preseason watch list.
Ricci, a long stick midfielder from Wayne, Pa., was just one of 16 players to be named to the first team, considered as one of the elite lists in the country. A native of Wayne, Pa., Ricci is regarded one of the nation's premier long stick middies.
He picked up 84 groundballs last season, which was fifth most in program history for a single season. Ricci also led his team with 41 caused turnovers. The Greyhounds assembled a 6-1 record in ECAC play in 2008 and made their second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament.
In three seasons at Loyola, Ricci has appeared in 39 games. In that time, he has picked up 141 groundballs and caused 64 turnovers. Ricci collected at least fivegroundballs on 10 different occasions last season.
After finishing 2008 with a conference-high 44 points, Koppens was selected as the ECAC Offensive Player of the Year and earned USILA Honorable Mention honors.
Koppens, an attackman from Clifton Park, N.Y., led the `Hounds with 25 assists last season and was second with 19 goals. He currently stands eighth on Loyola's all-time assist list with 61 going into the `09 campaign.
During his three-year career at Evergreen, Koppens has tallied 49 goals and 61 assists for a total of 110 points. That number puts him only 25 points shy of breaking into the Top Ten on Loyola's career points list.
The Greyhounds open up their season on February 14, 2009, against Notre Dame in Atlanta, Ga.
