BALTIMORE - A pair of Loyola University Maryland seniors - defender Steve Dircks and face-off specialist John Schiavone - were named to the Faceoff Yearbook Preseason All-America Squad by Inside Lacrosse Magazine.
Both players earned honorable mention on the list of the nation's top players. As a team, the Greyhounds were ranked 14th in the publication.
Dircks was an All-ECAC Second Team member in 2008 as a starting defender before missing the 2009 season with a knee injury. He returned to the field last year as a starter and helped bolster a defense that gave up just 7.93 goals per game, the third-best mark in NCAA Division I last season. Dircks, an accounting major, had a career-high 34 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers as a junior in 2010.
Schiavone has earned a reputation as one of the top face-off men in the nation over the last two seasons. He earned All-America Honorable Mention from the USILA. He won 166-of-277 restarts (.599), good for sixth-best in the nation and second amongst players on teams who reached the NCAA Tournament. Schiavone, who is an information systems major, also led the Greyhounds with 90 ground balls in 2010.
The Greyhounds open the 2011 season on February 19 when they host the U.S. Naval Academy at Ridley Athletic Complex.
