Baltimore, Md. - The Loyola College men's lacrosse team is ranked No. 12 in the Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Preseason Poll. The 2007 poll, released today, has defending National Champion Virginia at the top and includes five ECAC schools in the Top 25. Loyola's ranking is its highest preseason ranking since 2002.
"We have a great group of seniors who have worked hard and deserve a preseason Top-20 recognition," says Loyola Head Coach Charley Toomey. "With that said, we know that every Saturday is a battle and our goal is to play in the postseason - not to be ranked preseason."
Coach Toomey will be in his second season at Head Coach in 2007 after guiding the Greyhounds to the brink of the playoffs in 2006. In his first year at the helm, Toomey led Loyola to a 6-6 overall record, taking Johns Hopkins to overtime in a season finale that burst Loyola's NCAA Tournament bubble. Coach Toomey was the ECAC Coach of the Year and returns a veteran lineup this spring.
The Greyhounds lose a standout goalie in Michael Fretwell to graduation, but return 12 seniors and a majority of last season's starting lineup. Among those seniors and starters returning are team captains Dan Bauers (a first-team All-ECAC pick in 2006), Steven Hess (second-team All-ECAC) and twin brothers Jordan Rabidou and Ryan Rabidou.
Last year, the Greyhounds were picked 23rd in the preseason poll. They opened the season with a one-goal loss to No. 11 Towson and fell in overtime (another one-goal defeat) to No. 7 Johns Hopkins in the season finale. Wins over No. 2 Georgetown and No. 16 Penn State highlighted the season, but hard-fought one-goal defeats kept them out of the postseason.
This season, the Greyhounds hope to build off of last season's success, learn from its heartbreak, and take it a step further. Loyola will play nine teams ranked in the Preseason Top 25, including three teams ranked in the Top 5 in No. 2 Johns Hopkins, No. 3 Syracuse and No. 5 Georgetown. The Greyhounds open the season at No. 16 Notre Dame, return home to play No. 11 Towson before hitting the road for back-to-back weeks against No. 17 Penn State and No. 6 Duke.
